How to Get Employment Services
State Agencies:
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health & Human Services has a number of public agencies that provide employment related services to people with disabilities which include the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC), the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (MCDHH), the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation (DMR). If you meet eligibility guidelines, these agencies may provide employment services directly, or they may provide funding for you to receive services through a private agency in the community.
One-Stop Career Centers:
People with disabilities can use all the services of the Massachusetts One-Stop Career Centers. There are 32 centers located across the state, and there are Disability Program Navigators available in most centers.
Go to http://www.massworks.org/massworks1.html for an explanation about the role of the Disability Navigator and contact information.
Go to http://www.detma.org/WSCareerCenters.htm for a list of all Massachusetts Career Centers.
Private Agencies:
A wide variety of community-based employment services, usually operated by not-for-profit organizations, are available throughout the state. The Resource Locator allows you to search for organizations either by name in simple search, or by location or service area in guided search. It is suggested that you review the "tips" section and note the "help" section that is available. When looking at private agencies keep in mind the need for funding.
Finding Programs:
Check the Glossary (currently under construction) of this website and familiarize yourself with important terms and names related to job seeking. Then, use these terms and names in a web-based search, or use them in a guided search in the Resource Locator of the EOHHS website, or contact the nearest office of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) for vocational rehabilitation services and/or vendors or contact the nearest Independent Living Center for assistance with peer support, advocacy, education and locally based community service referrals.
