The MassHealth/ CommonHealth Plan

What is the CommonHealth Plan?
CommonHealth is a MassHealth insurance plan for disabled adults and disabled children living in Massachusetts who cannot get MassHealth Standard. You may be eligible for MassHealth CommonHealth if you are: 

  • a disabled child under age 18, OR
  • a disabled person aged 18 or older who
    • works 40 hours or more a month, OR
    • is under age 65 and is not working, or if working meets certain state and federal rules.

Is there an income limit?
No, there is no income or asset limit for CommonHealth. If your monthly income before taxes is above a certain amount, you will have to pay a monthly premium.


What about other health insurance?

Even if you already have health insurance, you may be eligible for CommonHealth.


How can I apply, or where can I get more information?
You can get more information or request an application (called a Medical Benefit Request) by:

  • Connecting to the MassHealth website or
  • Calling the MassHealth Customer Service Center at 1-800-841-2900 (TTY: 1-900-497-4648). They are open between 9:00 am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

What kind of health-care benefits does CommonHealth offer?

MassHealth CommonHealth members have access to a health-care benefits package very similar to MassHealth Standard members. Some covered services include the examples listed below. There may be some limitations, which your health-care provider can explain to you. The MassHealth / CommonHealth web site contains a more detailed description of covered services.

  • inpatient hospital services
  • outpatient services
  • medical services: lab tests, X rays, therapies, pharmacy services*, eyeglasses (restrictions apply), hearing aids, medical equipment and supplies, adult day health, and adult foster care
  • mental health and substance abuse services
  • well-child screenings
  • disabled adults on Medicare part B
  • transportation services

*Beginning January 1, 2006, if you are eligible for both Medicare and MassHealth, Medicare will provide most of your prescription drug coverage through a Medicare prescription drug plan. Visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE for information about whether you need to enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan, and, if so, how to choose one that is best for you.
